Focus on the good

It’s a bad habit most of us have, especially when it comes to our bodies.

We look in the mirror and immediately focus on what we don’t like about ourselves. This is too big or that’s too small, or too this or too that.

We get down on ourselves, and the negative tailspin for the day begins. That can fuel bad eating and exercising decisions, and before we know it, we’re back in front of the mirror, picking at this and that, and nose diving into a bag of chips.

Focusing on what we don’t like can still creep up along the way in this fitness journey. Even after losing 100 pounds, I can find myself focusing on what I think needs a lot of work instead of focusing on how far I’ve come in a lot of other areas.

Case and point – I’ve always been self-conscious about my arms. At my heaviest weight, you’d hardly ever see me without long sleeves. Now, after years of lifting weights, they are in the best shape ever. Friends and strangers give me compliments every now and then. But many times when I look in the mirror, I don’t see the progress. Instead, I can pick at the remaining pockets of fat, or countless lines of stretch marks, or that remaining jiggle. Ladies, you know what I’m talking about.

I’ve learned that when I focus on things I don’t like, I put myself in a negative space, and that is a danger zone for bad decisions. instead – I’m training myself to focus on what makes me smile. my shoulders are on point! Waist is smaller than ever. And my calves are high heel ready! That type of focus creates a positive emotion, and encourages you to make good decisions for your health all day long.
